Funding & Student Support

Funding for Chinese Flagship

Chinese Flagship is a federally funded program that provides extensive scholarship opportunities for our students' summer study abroad and Capstone year abroad. While this funding is not guaranteed, the typical student in our program does receive substantial funding to offset costs for summer study abroad, domestic summer language study, and the overseas Capstone year.

Much of the Flagship experience takes place on the IU Bloomington campus during the regular academic year and includes both credit-bearing classes and free extracurricular activities. Although no funding is provided from the Flagship Program for academic years on campus, students are encouraged to apply for the wide variety of scholarships and financial aid available through IU and other sources to help fund both their academic years and summer study.

Flagship students who are also ROTC cadets may be eligible for additional funding opportunities through partnerships between the Defense Language and National Security Education Office (DLNSEO), Army Cadet Command, Air Force ROTC. More information about these opportunities is available here: Army ROTC and Air Force ROTC.

IU + external scholarships

All Flagship students are highly encouraged to apply for prestigious national scholarships including the Boren Awards for International Study, Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarships, and Critical Language Scholarships for Intensive Summer Institutes. We provide extensive guidance and support for students pursuing these awards and our students have been very successful in recent years in winning these awards.

For information about other scholarship opportunities that may help fund your undergraduate education, visit the IU available scholarships webpage to help you identify IU scholarships for which you might be eligible. This list of non-IU scholarships, also maintained by IU’s Office of Scholarships, can direct you to additional sources of funding.
